Anchorage, AK Capturing the Aurora Borealis is a lot like hunting, there’s a lot of chase involved and there are many things that need to align in order to get the shot: aurora activity, weather/clear skies, new moon/dark sky and your travel availability (and/or accommodations). You spend a lot of time on various apps and websites, following the fluctuating predictions, activity location and cloud cover. I spent a week in Alaska without a single shot and then… the weather cleared. By that time, I was back from Fairbanks and in Anchorage, not a prime location for Aurora viewing due to […]

Kaktovik, AK There are two major Polar Bear viewing destination options in North America: Churchill, Canada and Kaktovik, Alaska. Kaktovik is an Eskimo village located on the Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocean), near the Canadian border. It is the cheaper, less touristy option but is not otherwise a tourist destination. There is not much else to do here for a tourist and the accommodations are geared towards oil worker/man-camp needs. See the many postings on Tripadvisor for more information and reviews of lodging. The village is a typical North Slope community, is dry (no alcohol) and a bit impoverished. There are […]

Port Lions, Kodiak Island, Alaska The accommodations for a PBS Original Fare shoot on Kodiak Island for Iron Way Films were situated next to a fishing outfitter that cleaned their fish daily at water’s edge. As a result, there’s an unusually large number of Bald Eagles present and I’ve never seen so many in one place. Fairbanks, AK Capturing the Aurora Borealis requires long-exposure images and video is accomplished by timelapse photography (an exception to this is the new, light-sensitive Sony A7s, which, from what I’ve seen on the web, can capture video in real time). This was my first foray into shooting the aurora so the notes below are for meant other newbies. Tips: Book your trip around the full moon, as moonlight light can diminish the brightness of the aurora. Look at a lot of aurora photos in advance of shooting. Thee best ones for me have interesting objects in the foreground (trees, mountains, water […]

Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alaska Accessible only by sea plane, Katmai National Park is located on the Alaska Peninsula and is the location depicted in the Warner Herzog film, Grizzly Man, about the death of bear activist, Timothy Treadwell.  Having a fair amount of respect for Brown Bears/Grizzly bears (read “fear of”), I originally cringed at the site of Timothy Treadwell meandering amongst these bears and never did I imagine I would ever willingly find myself in a similar environment. However, having traveled there with an experienced, local guide, I now understand what he was able to do. The short of it is that, […]
